COACHES
Sometimes things are not what they seem ....
If you read the last article I wrote here, you would understand a little better what I mean with this title, (click here to read last article, don’t worry it is short ...), it all started at the end of the spring 2010, Jared had 2 super nationals coming, and we were preparing aggressively as he was getting to the end of his first year in the 14’s, and with a top 10 ranking already, we knew he could be in the top 3, if he played his game, so we were very hopeful and excited with possibility that by august Jared could end the first year of the 14’s in the top 3, and even #1 if he played very well. We left no stone unturned, by we I am talking Jared, his Dad and I, we took every part of his game that needed work and got it working, and kept his strengths even stronger, at times we worked so hard he would feel he had to seat down as he was exhausted, and then as he has grown 6 inches in the last 8 months his joints were hurting him from time to time. He would tell us sometimes he had pain in his stomach, or in his knees, shoulders, but we mainly attributed this pain to growing so fast and moved on. Finally the day had come, we got to Ft. Lauderdale 3 days early to adapt to the temperature, courts, etc., and practice 3 to 4 hrs a day making sure he kept the level of play and concentration “up there” so he could perform as expected and either make it to the final 4, or compete ...... A little Advice
It is better to get a little of a good thing, than a lot of a bad one.
Until I had my first and only child, I didn’t realize how important it was to have the proper foundation on whatever they were learning. This is why I feel bad for the parent that puts the kid in a program where the instructors are not qualified, and 3 years later they come to me and say “I think she/he is now ready for you”.
Ready for what ???? It will take me 3 years to undo the damage done in the other side, and at that point is to late to put something worthwhile together. The only solution at that point is to work with what they have, and somehow ease the pain. The Pain they will have, as they understand that they will never have the necessary tools to achieve their dreams of a division 1 scholarship, or a top 20 or better ranking in the country. As a parent do yourself a favor, compare what your children are learning with the technique of a pro player, although of course it’s not going to be exactly the same, technique and footwork should be very similar, with the same reference points. There is a better chance to play like Federer if you look like Federer. Just a little advice ....

Upsets in the 16s on Day 2 of the Orange Bowl International Tennis Championships
While a number of seeded players exited the 2011 Orange Bowl International Tennis Championships in quick fashion on Monday, the top players in the boys’ and girls’ 18s draws advanced with very few exceptions on Tuesday as the first round of play came to a close. However, the boys’ and girls’ 16s draws provided drama in droves at the Frank Veltri Tennis Center, including an upset of a top-seeded player.
Both No. 1 seeds in the boys’ and girls’ 16s draws faced serious challenges in Tuesday’s second round, with opposite results. Anton Desyatnik of Russia squared off against wild card Jared Donaldson, a R.I. native, and after losing the first set, looked to be in total control halfway through the third, reaching match point on a number of occasions. But Donaldson, who trains full-time in Argentina, and learned his tennis at RI Tennis Academy, saved each and every one before ultimately securing a 7-6(5), 2-6, 7-5, upset. Donaldson is just one of three Americans to reach the round of 16, along with wild card Joseph Di Giulio of Newport Beach, Calif., and qualifier Shane Monroe of Ventnor City, N.J
We have a plan for every single kid, everyone has a goal to reach, they understand they can become great in the next 3 years ..... I would be smiling too ....
